Located just off the Great Western Trail
This cache is in a small ammo can just a few feet off the Great Western trail, on the leg that climbs to the top of Thurston peak amongst others. The coordinates for where the trail branches off the shoreline segment are: WGS84 N41,05.940 W111,54.023 This is a great hiking trail that gets little use. At some times while on it, you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, while at other times the roar of the jets taking off at Hill AFB, and the traffic on highway 89 keep you well aware of where you are. The nearest official trailhead is the one at Fernwood park, with the trailhead being at: N41,05.302 W111,54.104. From Fernwood, you’re looking at a hike of a couple miles during which you’ll climb almost 500 feet. Later in the year I intend to place another cache in a very scenic little basin farther up this hill. That would make this route an excellent way of getting to the Peak a Boo Thurston cache. The Cache is on a western facing part of the hill, thus the snow will melt off early. The cache hiding spot is on the ground though, which means finding it if there is snow would be tough. Remember this is a desert, so I recommend bringing water, keeping an eye on the weather, and of course watching out for rattlesnakes during warm months as they are fairly common on western slopes of the Wasatch Mountains. I’d tried to include somewhat decent items in the cache, so please help me make the cache worth stopping at.
