Sergeant Schultz's Revenge Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

mbooda: Finally got a day of decent weather to go back and check this one. Was able to get to the final zero without much difficulty. Even found what I’m pretty certain was the tree at the zero. But after a good long search, I found no evidence of the hide.

I deeply regret having to finally put this one to bed. It has hung on grimly for many, many years, in many locations and manifestations. Various stages have over time experienced fires, hurricanes, being plowed under, chopped down and otherwise muggled. Its name has changed more than once. Its original name, Witness, bears witness to the Witness post that used to be here. I humbly thank the original owner, Mojesic, as well as kayakingtwilbecks, kcseagull, Sabaharr and all the intrepid geocachers over the years who took on the challenge of searching for this hide. The final nail in its coffin is due to how geocache-unfriendly the buffer zone has become, thanks to both man and nature. Both sides of Old Hwy 11 are now gated; the southeast side is the laser shooting range, the northwest side private or utility property.

Cache on, y’all.

Geocache Description:

Visit us at www.MSGA.Net - Home of the Mississippi Geocachers Association

A multi-cache in the Stennis Space Center's Buffer Zone.

The first stage (see below) gives the coordinates (and a good approach point) to the second and final stage, an ammo can with lots of goodies inside.

Please note: Thru traffic from I-10 to I-59 on Hwy. 607 is not allowed, as it passes through the Stennis Space Center. The suggested approach is from I-59.

Yes, this is what used to be the old WITNESS geocache. For the illustrious history of WITNESS, see the log entries from 2003-2008. I adopted WITNESS back in 2006. Over time, both its first and second stages were effectively destroyed, although they hung on grimly. I have relocated the second stage very far from where it used to be, so don't use any old (pre-2006) coordinates for it. The first stage has also moved about 500 feet. The Witness Post which gave the cache its name is gone, so I had to find a different form for the first stage (and a different name; thanks avenger007 and GCHNQB for the inspiration).

Upon arrival, to the southeast, you'll see the barbed wire surrounding Stalag 13 (where I work) and warning signs; you may also see guard dogs and a machine gun tower. Obviously, you don't want to cross into that. Don't worry, you won't have to get very close. At the coordinates above, to your southeast you will see two small rectangular signs hanging side by side on the fence. The two signs have eight words each on them. (Some of the words are only initials.) The final cache location is:

N 30° 25.ABC W 089° 39.DEF where:

A= # of letters in the first word, first sign, minus 2
B= # of letters in the sixth word, second sign, minus 1
C= # of letters in the second word, second sign
D= # of letters in the third word, first sign
E= # of letters in the seventh word, first sign, plus 1
F= # of letters in the fifth word, second sign, minus 1

If you turn about 180° around after reading the signs, you should see a good approach path to the final.

Upon obtaining the coordinates for the last stage, you might want to prepare yourself with protective clothing and even bring a machete. Seriously. It's also advisable to check the terrain at the approach to the final on the satellite map. Also, don't hesitate to message me before attempting the final. If nothing else, I can cheer you on, from a distance.
