Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the Fort White Midigation Park. The parking coords are: N 29 54.773 W 082 46.508. Walk in only, no bikes. The trail going is on a slope going to the end clearing and part on a old road going back. It is in a area going back to parking that looks like the oaks were killed by a disease. You have to watch out for alot of the dead branches in the trail. Not a place for a stroller or real young kids due to the down branches and the slope on the trail.

This cache is located in Gilchrist county, so don't waste your time trying to get there in Columbia county. This cache is located at the original site of Fort White. It was a Second Seminole War fort beset with health problems due to the location on the Santa Fee river. Fort White was established in 1837. As noted in the National Intelligencer it was in a poor location due to marsh and low area on two sides and across the river from it. A physician noted that an abundance of fleas, house flys, horse flys, ants and cockroaches. The place was also over run with rats. At times there were not enough men to mount guard due to sickness. Fort White had a mortality rate of 9.6 percent in 1839. Fort White was closed in the early 1840's and reopened for afew months in the late 1840's to protect the local farmers from renagade indians. As you stand in the clearing looking around just think of what the men stationed there in 1838 or 39 were going through with wool uniforms and living off the land and what could be bought off the local farmers. It was a place that could be discribed as hell. May they rest in peace they deserve it.
