Geocache Description:

Rural Retreat Lake Cache

This little lake is a gem. My family and I often spend a day (or night) at Rural Retreat Lake. It is a very quiet and relaxing place, and the fishing is great! No Motor boats or Jet Skis, just peace and quiet. Only boats equipped with electric motors (or oars if you prefer) are allowed to operate on this lake

The Lake is stocked with Muskie every year by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and there are some bigguns in there!

The largemouth bass creel limit is one and a minimum size limit of 18 inches, the lake provides good bass fishing, especially if you like to catch and release.

Northern pike were stocked from 1997 to 1999 to prey on the over abundant bluegill and crappie. This management strategy is working. Instead of many thin crappies, the lake’s population is definitely shifting to fewer and fatter fish. Fly fishing is a great way to enjoy the many bluegill and crappie.

Channel catfish up to 15 pounds have been caught from the lake. Cut bait, garlic cheese, night crawlers, or chicken livers seem to work well for me.

A small pond adjacent to Rural Retreat Lake is stocked seasonally with trout. From October 1 through June 15, a trout license is required to fish this pond and anglers are limited to six trout per day.

The lake has a boat ramp, ample shoreline fishing, picnic shelters, campgrounds, and a concession that sells food, bait, and tackle. There is also a nice swimming pool. The boat ramp and lake are open 24 hours a day, year-round, with the other facilities open on a seasonal basis. There is no fee to enter the park, but valid fishing permits are required if you decide to fish.

***The Cache ***

The Cache is hidden just a few steps off of a nice level trail that goes around the North side of the lake. The trail is wooded for most of the walk, and most of the folks use the other side of the lake for their picnics, camping etc.

The best place to park to find the trail on the north side of the lake is at N36 52.118 / W081 17.457. You will have to walk across a grassy field approx. 150 yards to find the trail. But Hey, your GPSr should be telling you that, right?

Good Luck!
