NOTE A fountain was installed in the Summer of 2006, a
little ways past the motorcycle statue. Be sure to check it out, as
it is highly unusual! A separate physical cache, by aerospacecase,
is in the area of the fountain
This is a simple, walking virtual “tour” of the area around the
old train depot building. There are eight questions to answer to
claim a find, plus an extra-credit question (in green), for fun.
E-mail your answers to us; please do NOT post them in your log
here! If they are correct, your “found it!” log will stay.
There is a fair amount of free parking in the area around the
posted co-ordinates. The co-ords are for a round planter with a
plaque in it.
What is the date of dedication on the plaque?
If you head west from the plaque, you'll come to a gazebo with a
new plaque on it. No questions about this, but it's worth the short
jaunt. Santa Paula has put a fair amount of money and effort into
renovating this area. This is quite a gamble for a community with
little free money, and we hope it pays off for them. Be sure to at
least buy a snack when you visit; any sales tax money goes back to
the City to keep this area looking nice.
Head east (from the gazebo or the plaque) along the street to
the front of the red and white building on your left. This is the
old depot.
Name either of the two groups who are tenants of this
building, now?
On the front (east-facing side) of the old depot is a
plaque.
In what year did the Depot open for business?
What is the Ventura County Landmark No.?
Across Tenth Street is a statue that was dedicated early in
March of 2003. Be sure to cross with the lights!
Where was the St. Francis Dam? Be specific.
On what date did it collapse?
Cross Santa Barbara Street and Tenth Street (in either order),
to a very large tree with massive roots that stick several feet
above ground.
What is the common name for this tree?
Who planted it, and when (give full date as on sign)?
For extra credit, where in the world is the
place-name from which this tree derives the first part of its
common name?
That’s it! E-mail us your answers and
post a “found it”.
There are other things to see in the
area, too: the Union Oil Museum, the airport and a number of
physical caches.
