Your search for this ammo box will lead you past the Nevins Homestead along the Cedar Creek Hiking Trail in the Mark Twain National Forest. This section of the trail is open to hikers, mountain bikers or equestrian use.
This ramshackle house was once the home of the Nevins family, African-American subsistance farmers who eeked out a living in the hills and woods of Callaway County. This homestead transfered to the USDA in the 1980s and now is a "point of interest" along the Cedar Creek Hiking Trail. This is a really cool site. Make sure you check out the barn as well as the house. The sign in front of the house points the way.
So as not to impact the cultural significance of the site the cache is not placed directly at the homestead but some distance behind it.
Be aware, there is trash (excuse me, artifacts) scattered near the cache site. Please watch your step and keep an eye on your children. I don't think I would attempt this one at night. Also, we observed a set of bear tracks the day we placed this cache.
There are two ways into this cache. You can park at the Pine Ridge Recreation Area on Highway Y and hike the trail 1.5 miles from there or go to the parking area located at N38° 46.528/W92° 08.582 and walk about a half mile. If you park here walk down the road until you find the trail. It's clearly marked. The trail will take you across a creek and up a steep hill. If you're on horseback you'll have to go in this back way as the Pine Ridge section of the trail is not open to equestrian use.
I've made an effort to make this a decent cache with good stuff in it. Let's keep it worthwhile for those who come later by trading fairly. Please leave things YOU would like to trade for.
