Lake Peak Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

rocksnrivers: I suspect that Santa Fe crackpot and self appointed savior of the free world Sal Maestas stole the cache and didn't bother to tell anyone.

Sal Maestas is on a tear to steal all caches placed in wilderness areas and firmly believes that he's doing a favor to the world.

It is his common modus operandi to impose his belief system upon everybody else. So if you own a cache placed in wilderness look out he's likely to snatch it.

You win Sal. I will no longer maintain this cache in YOUR mountains.

Geocache Description:

Get ready to hike! You beginning elev. is approx. 10,296 (N35/47.752 - W105/48.284) at the Santa Fe ski area and the stash is hidden at approx.12,299. Round trip distance is just under 5 miles and total ascent is just over 2,400 feet. You begin at the trailhead nearest the restrooms at the lower base of the ski area. As you enter the ski area just stay left and you will see them on your left. You will climb approx 1/2 mile until you reach a fence where the forestry sign-in sheet is located. Go right and proceed up the fence-line. At your first (of many) view point(s) the trail will bear right and you will gradually circle Lake Nambe. Soak it in. As you continue the trail will open into a clearing with a clear view of the summit and the ridge leading up to it. The stash is NOT at the summit. It is on the slope side of the first peak as you emerge above the treeline, looking back down at the ski basin. The stash is hidden relatively close to the tree-line so you can easily find cover in case of the frequent thunderstorms. Be prepared for storms! Bring plenty of water (not a 16 oz bottle of Ozarka!), rain gear, and nutrition or lunch. Do NOT try to summit in inclimate weather because YOU are the highest point here and are susceptible to lightning strikes - OUCH!. Make a day-hike of this, be prepared and even if you don't find the treasure you will be rewarded with stunning views, a great work-out, and a richly deserved meal back in town!

The stash is in an ammo can.
