Geocache Description:

Located on the very southernmost shoreline of the ancient isle of Cyprus, a cache placed in a rocky niche with a fantastic view of rugged and wild Mediterranean seashore cliffs. Elevation 97 feet. Hidden with permission on the Akrotiri RAF Base

Note: this cache is located on the Akrotiri RAF base in the British Sovreign Area of Cyprus. If you can legally access this location go for it. If not, don't try to sneak on, the gate guards would not be happy. That being said, this cache is not located near any sensitive military facilities or restricted areas and should be freely acessable provided you are legal to get on the station.

This cache, in a nice 6 inch square plastic food container, is hidden on the historic Akrotiri peninsula, home to the oldest known settlement location by humans on Cyprus. Archaeological excavations identify traces of habitation going to 8500 BC when the locals hunted pygmy elephants and hippopatomus. In fact, the soils on the rocky slope where this cache is hidden are strewn with pottery shards spanning the range of civilization from pre-grecian times to the last of the Venetian Empire.

Very close to the cache are Roman rock cut graves, small niches and arches cut directly into the limestone making up the clifftop of this southernmost coast of Cyprus.

In the cache are a variety of goodies hidden by Helodriver during an extedned "working vacation" at the Akrotiri base.

Contents include: American flag patch, playing cards, various toys, fossil miocene era scallop and oyster shells, plastic beads, fishing equipment, tabasco sauce, pumice stone, logbook and pen plus other good stuff.

The footing here is rocky and good shoes are helpful, a bit of a climb is in order as well. Please be sure to cover the cache as well as you found it to reduce the plunder potential.

The view is fantastic with the clear blue Med stretching off to an unobstructed horizon to the south. If feeling adventurous, climb down further from the cache to see fossils in the rock layers near the current sea level and find hidden coves and tidepools.

Enjoy!

Helodriver
