Geocache Description:

You can look forward to a nice walk in the forest and an exciting treasure hunt in »Ulykkesmosen« in Tokkekøb Hegn near Blovstrød.

Ulykkesmosen (The Accident Bog) has its gloomy name from once upon a time in 1888, when the »Drabæk Killer« - Lars Rose - lost his life in the forest. The story goes that Lars Rose killed a man in order to steal his wooden shoes. Lars Rose was unveiled as the murderer as the wooden shoes of the victim were found in his stack of firewood. After having served his sentence Lars Rose was employed in the forest. One day Lars had climbed up in a beech tree from where he could see directly to the exact spot where he had killed the man. He became so uneasy by the situation that he fell to the ground and broke his neck. The tree, which is no more, was hence called »Ulykkesbøgen« (The Accident Beech).

Tokkekøb Hegn is an old and very fertile forest covering 1.559 acres with a variety of different trees of which the beech is the most common. Every spring you can enjoy the forest floor covered with blooming anemones and other forest floor plants which only grow under old trees. Islands and islets in St. Donsedam (pond) and the banks of the lake is kept as untouched forest. Here you will find both beech and oak trees ageing from 150-200 years. ln the untouched forest overturned or dead trees are left where they are and thus slowly a virgin type of forest will emerge with new growth in the glades. This enables a unique vegetation and animal life.

History of the area: Tokkekøb Hegn belonged in earlier days to Hørsholm Estate, which was the King’s private property from 1391 and until 1771 where it became national property. By a so called forest order of 1781 it was declared that the pastures should be parted from the actual forest areas. Thus an area of same size as the forest today was fenced in by stone fences or earth banks during the 1780’ies. Donse Overdrev (common) was acquired and planted as late as the 1850’ies.

The name Tokkekøb was first mentioned in 1582 but from where it originates and what it means is uncertain. Linguists believe that »tokke« is an ancient word for an estimated bargain (no surveying). Tokkekøb is also the name of former forest supervisor’s house situated east of the forest.

The vicinity around Tokkekøb Hegn is characterized by a great number of short hills going northwest-southeast. This vivid landscape was created 10-12.000 years ago towards the end of the last ice age, as the edge of the ice moved back and forth as it melted away. ln the hollows between the hills small lakes were formed and became bogs as time went by.

You can park in a parking area at Kongevejen, at Blovstrød Allé or at Stumpedyssevej.

The cache is a white 1 liters cultura-yoghurt-container. Initial contents were logbook with a pencil, FFC and a small selection of trading-items.

Please put the lid back on the cache container so it's 100 % tight before you leave!
