The road in is spotted with mud and water holes after wet weather. 4 wheel drive recommended. if the weather has been dry the road won`t be too bad. hiking all the way would be nice as this is a forest rich in wild life such as coyote, fox, raccoon, deer, hawks, owls, and the jersey devil
Welcome to the Salt Hay Cache. Salt Hay farming was an important part of the economy in this area from colonial times up into the 1950s. it was used for insulation, packing material, mixed with other feeds for cattle. to learn more about salt hay use your favorite search engine.
The area of the cache was once farmed for salt hay and if you look to the south you can still see an old hay rake sitting in the meadow. this was a laborous activity. the salt marsh was tough to work. the hay was often cut by hand with a scythe or with horses wearing special shoes much like snowshoes so they wouldn`t sink in the muck.
To reach the cache drive or hike the dirt road till you`re perpendicular to the cache, this should put you at a wooded finger extending out in the marsh headed for the cache.
The container is a .30 caliber ammo can. this cache has some goodies in it. a mini mag flashlite, new can of repel permanone tick spray, a can of deer hunters cover scent. please keep the stash in quality gear.
Sign the log book and keep hunting.
