Go to Miniota, Manitoba...then go 2KM north on Highway 83, cross the railroad bridge. Turn left (West) on the first road. Follow the road and cross the little railroad bridge. Follow the road to the parking area. Sign the log for the Silver Bend Hiking Trail and take a map. Follow the trail to the Babuik Homestead. You will find the geocache in the general area of the homestead but not at the homestead.
On Saturday, April 12th four XII Manitoba Dragoons Cadets and one Royal Canadian Air Cadet from 677 Russell Squadron plus one CIC (Army) Officer. The cadets were Tyson Andrews, Philip Arndt, Justin Elliott, Vincent Moore, and Gordon Sansom. The weather was absolutely super.
The Silver Bend Hiking Trail isn't too hard but there are water hazards in the spring and after heavy rains. It's an interesting hike with lots to see with part of it going by the Assiniboine River. There are gravesites, a river steamer landing, and a homestead along the trail.
You have to go off the trail to find the geocache.
It's in the middle of several large rocks.
On July 8th, 2003 the cache was revisited and dried out. This includes the contents. The white bucket was wrapped in three green garbage bags. No rain can get in. A red rag was tied in a tree near to the geocache since it now blends in with its surroundings.
Contents of the geocache: Royal Canadian Army Cadet Literature, CIC Literature, a Skyhawks decal, CO2 detector, 2 shoulder flashes of the XII Manitoba Dragoons, 4 Royal Canadian Army Cadet shoulder flashes, 2 XII Manitoba Dragoons cap badges, wedding bubbles, 1 toy compass, 1 Elkhorn School Keychain, 2 Collar Dogs, 3 US Navy pencils, 1 wine bottle cork, 1 coupon for a free drink in the lounge at Westhope , North Dakota, 1 cam stick, 1 Virden Summer Games Zipper Clip, 11 Cnadian Forces Buttons, and 1 ruler.
Also in the white five gallon pail is a log book and writing equipment (pen & pencils).
We got to the spot on 12/04/03 at 15:58:09 hrs. We waited for at least ten to fifteen minutes and had 11 satellites above us.
In the summer it takes about one and a half hours to get to the geocache if you're moving fast. In the winter it could take three hours or more.
You could likely go swimming at the paddlewheel riverboat landing but take a lifejacket with you. It's also a good place for a picnic. Remember to pack out your garbage.
This could be a good trail for mosquitoes to ambush you as there are areas for standing water as in beaver ponds and low spots. So dress the right way and have your bug juice.
It's a beautiful valley hiking trail. Have fun and put the lid back on our bucket.
