There is more to Huffman Mill than the covered bridge, but not much more. God's Country number 4
You will find this cache near Huffman Cemetery a little north of the community of Huffman Mill. The cemetery is on a high hill over the Anderson River. This was once a thriving community, ever so long ago. We didn’t hide it on the covered bridge because we didn’t want anyone getting hit by a car or falling into the river, high water comes up to just below the bridge structure several times a year. Be sure to see the bridge when you are in the area.
The 140 foot long Huffman Mill covered bridge was built in 1864 (legend has it that the first graffiti was spray painted on the timbers that same year). Many years before the bridge was built, Thomas Lincoln and his son Abe often brought corn to the Huffman grinding mill. Abraham Lincoln later wrote about swapping stories and talking politics with the men he encountered at Huffman Mill.
George Huffman came to Indiana in 1810, but went back to Kentucky the next year after a neighbor was scalped in the area. A few years later, after the War of 1812 that opened the area for settlement, he returned and built a grinding mill.
The cache is not located among the grave markers. The cemetary lane is a good place to park. Please be respectful of the graves.
