The River, The Trails, The Rails Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

HFJohn: This cache has lasted five years, and think that it is long enough. When it was placed there was no access from the Greenway Trail to the Lehigh Trail. The nearby old RR bridge was very dangerous to cross. Now the Lehigh Trail has been greatly improved and there is a walk way across the bridge, crossing the Genesee River. Thanks to all who have visited my cache.

Geocache Description:

Cache is located within 50 feet of the Genesee Valley Greenway Trail between Rush and Avon, NY. It is located in an area reminiscent of the past. The path - level being a former RR right-of-way. The walk about 1.5 miles from the nearest legal path access.

The Genesee Valley Greenway follows the path of the abandoned Genesee Valley Canal and Pennsylvania Railroad, passing through five counties, several villages and seventeen townships! The remnants of the canal and railroad provide tantalizing glimpses of life in the Genesee Valley more than 100 years ago. The Greenway winds through scenic woodlands, rolling farmlands and peaceful stream valleys, and is available to walkers, bicyclists, joggers, cross country skiers, school groups, birders, senior citizens and families ...anyone who enjoys and cares about the outdoors and the history of the Genesee region. Further information can be found at www.fogvg.org.

Best access to the trail is to start at approx. N43 0.303, W77 44.400 (Route 251 - Quaker Road). Parking is limited, but a couple of cars should be able to find roadside parking. Be sure to notice the history as you walk towards the cache - the old telephone poles, RR bridge, drainage creeks, maybe even an old railroad spike or two.

The cache container is a standard 50 cal. ammo box and although well hidden, shouldn't be too difficult to find. Good luck and Enjoy.
