Geocache Description:

The original and premier Oceanside raison d'être.

Latest Update: This cache has disappeared at least a dozen times, was a virtual cache for awhile, and is currently a NANO cache. Note that it is NOT a Bison Tube top zip-tied to the pipe. The container only has room for the log so bring your own writing instrument. It should be touchable but may not be removable if you have large fingers. But as long as you can touch it, you may claim the find. Now back to our regularly scheduled geocache. This is your chance to walk on, up, down, over, under, and through one of the best reasons to visit Oceanside at any time of the year. Find the cache and then enjoy your stroll. It doesn't count unless you circumscribe the restaurant at the end. Watch some of the best surfers in the world, the fishermen, a concert, the people, or just enjoy an afternoon of solitude at the beach. Instead of feeding a parking meter, park here for free: N 33° 11.630 W 117° 22.835 Good photo ops are always available around the pier. Please post your good ones. And you might as well log the benchmark at the head of the pier while you're in the area. Here's some additional information. Oceanside has always had a pier for residents and visitors to enjoy. The first one, built in 1888, was located at what is now Wisconsin Avenue. The next five were built on the site where you’ll find the current pier, at the end of Pier View Way. One of the most inspiring parts of this pier is the soaring concrete approach to the pier, which was built in 1925; the current wooden portion in 1988. At 1,954 feet, this pier is the longest wooden pier on the west coast. It has often been featured in movies and television shows. Recent examples include the movie "Bring It On" and the 28 March 2011 episode of "American Pickers". Enjoy the five minute walk to the restaurant at the far end for a meal or drink. Along the way you’ll notice the engraved names of local citizens who cared enough about the 1988 restoration to make a private donation. That says a lot about the people who live here. No license is required to fish from the pier. (Check with Tackle Town, located at 1009 N. Coast Hwy, 760-721-2697 for more information.) On a clear day, you’ll be able to see La Jolla, the Coronado Islands, San Clemente Island, and Santa Catalina Island. Enjoy your visit.
