Geocache Description:

Our Watershed Whereabouts series will take you to some interesting ecological locations in the Fraser Valley.

Click to view a larger version of this image For the first cache in our series you'll visit Williams Park, which is located very close to the 232nd Street exit on Highway 1. Entrance to the park is at N49 07.319 W122 33.891

Our eco-system is comprised of air, land, water and living creatures, including fish. And there's no shortage of fish at Williams Park. In fact, the University of British Columbia has used the Salmon River in Williams Park to study salmon migration patterns since 1972. Because of UBC's extensive study, the Salmon Watershed is one of the best documented watersheds in all of Canada.

The Salmon River and its watershed cover approximately 8,000 hectares (or about 25% of the surface area of Langley). The river flows for 33 km in a northwesterly direction through the area north of Aldergrove and the Salmon River Uplands before turning more northerly to pass through the Fort Langley floodplain and enter the Fraser River just west of Fort Langley.

While you're in Williams Park, be sure to explore the kiosk that is located at the bottom of the embankment just south of the parking lot. There is a lot of interesting information about the watershed, its history, and the role that it plays in the community.

To get to this cache, you'll have to cross Coghlan Creek and the Salmon River before heading into the forested area of Williams Park. Stay on the established paths. The cache is located just off of a path behind a large tree. You'll have to bend down a bit to get to it. The cache is in a 2.3 liter Lock & Lock container.

Satellite reception in the area is quite good but if you have a problem, there is a clearing cut underneath some power lines that borders along the west edge of the park -- you can acquire a good signal from this area. The cache is located about 15 meters along an established path from this area.

First Finder Bonus:

John Gilliat CD There is a special bonus for the first finder -- the latest CD from Langley resident and internationally known jazz flamenco guitarist, John Gilliat. If you are the first finder of this cache, you don't need to leave a trade item for the CD. You can also trade another item if you wish. If you enjoy the CD let us know -- if it's not to your liking, please place it in the zip-lock bag and trade it in another cache.

The cache started out with the following contents: John Gilliat CD, Beanie Bear, Bugs Life movie cards, hackey sack, doll making kit, package of crayons, lady bug kaleidoscope, hotwheels car, 4 pack of batteries, log book, laminated GeoCaching.com information sheet, pen, pencil and pencil sharpener.

Please sign the logbook, trade fairly and log what you've traded on the website -- we'd like to keep the quality of trade items high for this cache.

Have fun and enjoy your visit to Williams Park!

Please tread lightly when looking for a cache. It takes a long time for a plant that's been stepped on to grow back.
