Geocache Description:

Isolated, detached corner of Ferdinand State Forest. God's Country number 8

Adam Shoemaker was the son of a Revolutionary War solider and a very early Indiana settler. He came to Perry County during the War of 1812 and served as a minister and teacher. He was an abolitionist who had very strong beliefs against slavery. One of his parishioners and students at Little Pigeon Church in Spencer County was young Abe Lincoln whose position on slavery was influenced by the teaching of Adam Shoemaker. (Remember those stories about Abe Lincoln reading by candlelight late at night in a log cabin? He was doing the homework assigned by Adam Shoemaker)

He founded a Baptist Church and community at this site in the Hurricane Valley (pronounced Hurric’n around here). The church and the community are long gone. But Hurricane Creek still flows through the valley, the cemetery preserves the memories, and the abolitionist legacy sill makes this world a better place.

You will find more information about this Shoemaker family here: (visit link)

The cache is not located in the cemetery area, please respect those who rest in peace.
