This cache is located on a footpath that runs around the famous Nuthanger Farm, half a mile south of the Hampshire village of Ecchinswell.
This cache is the first of a three part cache, themed around the book 'Watership Down' by Richard Adams.
Richard Adams grew up in this area and knew it well, so it became the real life setting for his best-selling book and the fluffy, furry fictional characters that made their epic journey across this beautiful part of north Hampshire. If you haven't read the book, shame on you... It's a masterpiece and a must read for all ages!
This is the location in the book of the 'raid' where Hazel and friends attempt to free the hutch captive does.
From chapter 24,'Nuthanger Farm':
'Nuthanger is like a farm in an old tale. Between Ecchinswell and the foot of Watership Down and about half a mile from each, there is a broad knoll... stands the farmhouse, with its barns and out-buildings. The house may be two hundred years old or it may be older, built of brick, with a stone-faced front looking south towards the down. On the east side, in front of the house, a barn stands clear of the ground on staddle-stones; and opposite is the cow-byre.'
The cache can be found via public footpaths to the north, north west and south... Take your pick!... Parking is available opposite the north west footpath, accessable from the small road south out of Ecchinswell Village.
The north footpath is the easiest walk, with parking on the verge next to it.
Within the cache (ammo box), as well as the usual assortment you will also find the 'North' coordinates to the third and final cache in this trio, 'GCG014 - Watership Down - Part 3 - On the Down'. In order to find 'On the Down' you will also first need to find 'GCG011 - Watership Down - Part 2 - Caesar's Belt', which contains the 'West' coordinates.
Of course, there's a very good chance you'll see a few rabbits and hares along the way!
Want to see what lies ahead at 'On the Down'... Look to the south !
Please take the time to re-hide this cache properly when you have finished, as it's very close to the footpath... Thanks!
