Guajome Regional Park is a 557-acre park administered by San Diego County. It contains a developed portion with campground, picnic areas, wedding gazebo, duck pond, and playground. Guajome also has extensive natural areas and several miles of trails. The Rancho Guajome Adobe, built in the 1850s, is in a somewhat separated portion of the park. It is only open for guided tours at specific times on the weekends.
The cache is in a large-size plastic peanut jar with a yellow lid. It is in the natural area of the park amongst a group of boulders. The cache is about a 1/2 mile hike on a wide, flat trail from the recommended parking. There are lots of places to park in and around Guajome Park, but the best for reaching the cache is along N. Santa Fe Ave just east of its intersection with Mesa Drive, 33° 14.422N, 117° 16.359W. There is a parking lot in the park there, but you can avoid the $2 parking fee and the park closing hour by parking along N Santa Fe.
After visiting the cache you might want to go up the small hill above the boulders. About 80 feet southeast of the cache (33° 14.484N, 117° 15.959W) are several metates, evidence of Pre-Columbian usage of the park by Kumeyaay Indians. From the metates there is an alternative trail, parallel to the main trail, back to the parking area.
There is a bee colony about 6 feet from the cache. Sorry about that, but I didn't notice them until the last visit when things were pretty well set up. They don't seem to be very aggressive or bothersome if a few precautions are taken. First don't go searching for the cache in any of the brush; the cache is "on the rocks". The bee colony is on the edge of the rock area partially covered by brush. Secondly, don't stick your head or hands into any hole you can't see into. The cache is down in a crevice, but you can see into it clearly. Last, if you have an allergy to bees or just plain don't like the critters, don't do this cache.
