An easy walk beside a lake.
Semerwater lies in Raydale, a lovely side valley off Wensleydale. Although quite small, it is the largest natural lake in Yorkshire, and is drained by the shortest river in England, the River Bain, all of 2 miles long before it joins the River Ure.
A local legend tells that there was once a very wealthy city in the valley. One day, a poor traveller came to the city, and none of the rich people would give him food or shelter. Only a very poor tenant in his cottage up on the fell-side took him in. The traveller cursed the city, and immediately a great flood of water swallowed it up, and it was never seen again. It is said that the bells of the city can sometimes be heard on a wild night.
There is a nice walk right round the lake, passing on the way the ruined church at Stalling Busk.
