Geocache Description:

The first stage is along a well-packed small gravel path. Final stage is along an old, unpaved road. No steep hills, but a couple of inclines. The help guide rated this a 2/3.

The main spring on the property flows from a cave located at the base of a cliff and cascades down a rocky streambed as it works its way downhill. A mill was operated on the site during the 1800's and part of the foundation can still be found along the stream. However, this cache is not located near the stream. Explore the Preserve to find the other sites. Many trees and other plants are identified throughout the area.

The spring was popular among students from the one-room Saunders Spring School that was nearby. School Classes had their photos taken in front of the cave.

The original landowner was the Saunders family, for whom the area was named. A later land owner sold Saunders Springs to the federal government as a replacement for the original Fort Knox water supply.

Saunders Springs is becoming more popular as a picnic, hiking and biking area and separates Radcliff from part of Fort Knox.

The following is an excerpt from the Radcliff, KY website: “Saunders Springs Nature Preserve is a heavily wooded natural area located on steep terrain with interesting historic features. The preserve provides opportunities for nature study, hiking, picnicking, and historic interpretation.

“A handicapped-accessible trail winds through mature hardwood forest past cascading waterfalls as it leads from a parking area at the old water plant to the lake. Other hiking trails wind through the dense forest around the lake and from a parking area at the top of the hill to an overlook and on to the lake. A handicapped-accessible picnic area is located at the top of the hill and many trees are marked for identification along the trails. “ Visit the Saunders Springs website to learn more: (visit link)

Saunders Springs Nature Preserve is open dawn until 5 PM.

This multi-cache requires NO bushwhacking. The waypoint is at the top of the cache page is for Stage 1. In the container you will find the final waypoint. The waypoint can be read through the container, so please don’t remove the paper. The final cache is an cammo tape covered ammo can with a log sheet inside. The cache originally contained a pencil. Hopefully it still does. This cache IS NOT handicapped-accessible, though some have assumed the excerpt from the Radcliff, KY website indicates otherwise.

KEEP IN MIND: WHEN GEOCACHING IN SAUNDER SPRINGS, ERRANT READINGS MAY BE EXPERIENCED DUE TO TREE CANOPY COVER DURING SUMMER MONTHS AND SIGNAL BOUNCING WHEN DOWN IN THE BOWL. ALLOW SEVERAL MINUTES FOR YOUR GPSR TO STABILIZE WHILE HUNTING THE CACHES.

The Stage 1 container is a smokey grey mechanical pencil lead holder with a maroon cap. Dimensions:

2-7/8" Long X 7/16" Wide X 1/4" Thick

Click on Stage 1 container below to see the photo.

The Stage 2 5.62mm camoflauge tape covered ammo can, with a log sheet, a pencil and pencil sharpener. Please leave the sharpener in the container.

PLEASE BE PATIENT WHILE YOUR GPSR LOCKS ONTO THE SATELLITES. In this area, satellite signals may be difficult to receive during summer canopy cover and may be easier during fall and winter months.

Be mindful of the flora and fauna, and where you put your hands and feet. You don't know what may be hiding where.
