Ashford Hill National Nature Reserve (NNR) is a series of low-lying meadows in the valley of a small stream, which have been traditionally managed by grazing and hay-cutting with little or no fertiliser for many years.
Significant habitats and species Plant species of note are small fleabane and marsh stitchwort which are present in the permanently waterlogged areas. Other, drier sections hold good populations of Dyer's greenweed and large thyme, associated with anthills of the yellow meadow ant. 32 species of butterfly have been recorded including the purple emperor and five species of fritillary.
