Geocache Description:

High in the Ochocos

This cache will take you to the top of the Ochoco National Forest, or close to it. Spectacular views await anyone willing to do a little 4x4'ing or hiking. We wandered upon this spot while out for a Sunday drive. A place, a spot, high in the Ochocos, with a view to astound and ignite the senses. Bring a camera and some water.

The roads may or may not be gated, access may be limited, hunting season in this area is popular. You can enter the region from Grizzly (the way we came and a 4wd High Clearance vehicle is REQUIRED), or from the South (Prineville) which we would recommend on this chilly May morning. We found plenty of roads that were fenced on either side with private property (in the lower lands) but GATES were few and far between and at least outside of perhaps hunting season or when roads are inaccessible because of snow accumulation, this is a place that someone out for a drive to the top o' the world can enjoy.

This wonderful spot affords a panoramic view of the Western Ochoco Mountains. We were able to spot Grizzly Mountain, Gray Butte, Haystack Butte/Juniper Butte, Black Butte to the Southwest and numerous other landmarks all the way around.

An interesting side: On our travels we drove past what we thought at first might be a mine shaft. -Picture is an inset on the cache collage. It sits next to the road on the inside of a curve. A friend told me that it is/was used as a ramp for loading logs onto trucks. I haven't a clue -I bet logscaler or Paulina would know- but it is a rather impressive structure. The coords are N 44* 31.725', W 120* 48.106'.

You can find Prineville Weather Conditions here. We made this a 2 difficulty only because of the soupy, rutted roads you may encounter on your way up.
