Geocache Description:

This is one of two caches in the Fort Lincoln State Park. The cache is located on the Ridgeline Nature Trail. Along the trail you’ll enjoy a fabulous panorama of the On-A-Slant Indian Village, the confluence of the Heart and Missouri Rivers, and the Missouri river bottoms and surrounding area. The cache was created in cooperation with the Fort Lincoln State Park.

Fort Lincoln State Park is located about 7 miles south of Mandan. The cache may be approached in several different ways depending on whether you prefer a challenging or easy hike. If you like a challenge, turn off at Ft. Lincoln Road as you’re heading south of Mandan on Highway 6 and park at N 46° 47.087 W 100° 51.252. From this spot you’ll need to hike or bike about 1.2 miles one way. The trail is paved, and you’ll have some spectacular views of the Missouri River valley. If you’re looking for a bit more challenge after finding the cache, take the newly graded Ridgeline Trail back to your parking spot. You’ll have to bushwhack along a fence line back to the paved trail when you get to the north end of the park property. Don’t be surprised if you see deer.

The easy approach is to enter the park from the south, drive to the Blockhouse parking area, and pick up the Ridgeline Trail at the top of the bluff.

The cache is in an ammo can and contains a copy of the Journals of Lewis & Clark with a passage marked referring to this area as Clark saw it during 1804. Please do not remove the copy of the Journals of Lewis & Clark.

While you’re in this area, you might want to look for the Post Trail cache nearby.
