Geocache Description:

The display near maccamob’s sixty-fifth cache commemorates an early Victorian who made very effective use of trigonometry and was responsible for what was arguably Victoria’s first TRIG point, the South Base Stone.

You can read all about his exploits, and the exacting methods used which must have been state-of-the-art in his day, on the display board near the cache site. If you want to see that very first Heritage-Listed Trig Point itself (it has already been logged for the relevant locationless cache), it’s not very far away at S 37° 53.110 E 144° 41.854, sitting unobtrusively inside a cyclone mesh enclosure. To reach it, follow the foot track beside the railway that starts near S 37° 53.036, E 144° 42.014. See these Werribee Community Centre and Heritage Victoria sites for more details.

There can be quite a few cars and the odd pedestrian passing close by the cache site, and there may be onlookers in the nearby building, so retrieving and replacing the cache undetected may require patience. Please ensure the cache is well hidden from casual observation again before you leave
