Elephant Head is large granite crag that stands over a 1000 feet
high. It is located in the western foothills of the Santa Rita
Mountains. The recommend approach to the summit is the hikers trail
which begins in
Chino Basin, south of the main buttress.
The geocache
Cabeza de Dumbo (GCG3GT) by Las Tres Chupacabras has an
excellent description of two different approaches to the saddle. If
you park at N31 43.467 W110 56.882 Elephant Head Saddle is within
4-miles, hiking distance. From the saddle it is an easy class 3
scramble to the summit, via the prominent
east facing arete. The route up the arete is well marked with
cairns placed every 20 to 30 ft, or so. The climb up the arete
provides several instances of spectacular exposure, so if you are
overly afraid of heights this is probably not a hike for you.
The
cache is located within a few feet of the summit. It contains a
log and pencil, only.
