Geocache Description:

Gray Butte Cemetery

The above coordinates will put you at the beautiful sign you see as the cache page photo and the entrance to this small "high desert" oasis.

From here we recommend you walk the entire cemetery, it won't take long, but the poetic epitaths and ornate weathered headstones are worth checking out. To see a list of the interned (I don't think their list is real up-to-date but it gives an idea of the early dates and names) click here.

To find the actual cache container you will need to locate the wooden cross headstone in the cemetery. It has a necklace around it and a carved fish on it and you can find it with little effort. Since this is a multi-cache, we want you to do a little math. The cache is just a pleasant walk from GZ ...no need to re-park your rig. -wicked grin-

Add together all of the numerical digits on the abovementioned cross in the cemetery... There should be 9 digits. The total will = A

A - 26 = ww

  • 10A + 229 = xxx
  • (A - 3) / 10 = yy
  • 20A - 120 = zzz

Fill in the following to find the final coordinates to the cache:

N 44* ww.xxx or N 44* ___._______
W 121*yy.zzz or W121* ___._______

As a side note:

It seems there are folks who believe this old cemetery is haunted. If that affects the time of day or amount of people you take caching with you, that's completely up to you.

Hope you enjoy the little bit of history and for anyone interested can read the book “Jefferson County Reminiscences by "Many Hands". A great read. You can check out another great rural cemetery cache, Old Milo Gard Cemetery Redo.

No need to climb fences, disturb any graves or leave the cemetery to find the final.  Enjoy your walk about.  Message me if you need a nudge
