Beer Run #1 'The Road' Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

kimbest: Good new and bad news. The good news if the rubble field that made it hard going to this cache has been cleared away. The bad news is, that when I went to check on the cache it was gone. The spot it was in was there perfectly intact. But when I lifted the rocks there was no cache. I'm not planning on replacing the cache because the spot is a bit exposed and obvious. Thank to all the people who visited it.

Geocache Description:

Warning! you don't have to park on the freeway or dodge traffic to get this cache! A safe way to approach this cache is described further down. Please be safe and don't break the law!!!

The Seventies, these were my wonder years. Starwars, The Steve Millers Band, Disco, cruising, keggers. Gas was still cheap but it was in short supply. And the road, that was most important to a young man of 19 was Interstate 80. Why? Because it led to Park City and skiing? No. Because it led to the national parks like Grand Tetons and Yellow Stone? No. The reason is was so important can be summed up in two words: Beer Run! You see, back then the drinking age in Utah as 21, as it is today. But in Wyoming the drinking age was 19! Not only that but, the beer was a bit stronger than the beer in Utah (Not as much as we though, but that's another matter).

This is the first of a series of geocaches I plan to place along Interstate 80 to commemorate the Seventies and the feeling of adventure we felt as we took off on the road to return with a big carton of Mickie's Big Mouths. This first one, will familiarize you with the road we used. It's on a trail just off the walk way portion of the Bonneville Shoreline trail, at the mouth of Parley's canyon. Doing this cache you will get a lot of close views of I-80 and I-215.

But don't go nuts and try and park along the shoulder of I-80 to get here. The trail leaves the Bonneville Shoreline walkway at N 40 42.793 W 111 48.190. The big question is where to park! Me? I didn't have to park anywhere. I live in the Foothill Place Apartments to the north and walked the whole way. You can either park in the one of the business lots to the north, or in the lot off of 33rd south to the south. If you park in a business lot be sure and not park in any of the employee or customer only spots during business hours. Either way, your going to have to walk about .5 mile just to get to the trail head. After that, it's about another half mile to the cache. But, it's a nice level walk all the way. For about the last 500 feet you will be walking along the bottom of a big pile of boulders. Be careful and choose your path wisely. At no point do you have to climb up the boulders. So, if your GPS is pointing you up the pile, walk about another 40 feet and you will see the proper path.

I got this cache in the auction at the recent UTAG meeting in Delta (see the link below). It came fully stocked with some really great items. So trade fairly, and be sure and re-hide the cache well before you leave.

One last thing. The purpose of this cache is to promote nostalgia, and not the consumption of alcoholic beverages. If you are a young man of 19, I hope your parents raised you better than me. Just kidding mom! It was the times.
