Wheelchair accessible. A bird blind on one of the 5 trails at Levitz Park. Open sunise to sunset.
Entrance to Levitz Park is from the North.
The OMNI STONE TRAIL was built by SHADE (Students Helping Aid the Disabled and Elderly) and the PA Conservation Corps. The total trail is .5 miles long, however the brick portion is only half that. Stop at the number markers.
2) EROSION CONTROL BRIDGES prevent portions of land from being washed away and stream sediment may choke out animal life. In the spring, look for trout lilies in the water.
3) Before you are two oaks. The dominant one on the right is a WHITE OAK. Its wood has been used to make whisky barrels (Moonshine Church is NW of here). On the left is a RED OAK whose wood is used for furniture. Notice how the smaller tree grows looking for more space.
4) The huge SHAGBARK HICKORY gets its name from the loose bark, but please don't peel it off. Note the smaller hickory tree on the left which began from seeds fallen from its parent.
5) IRONWOOD or musclewood gets its name from its strength and resemblance to a flexed muscle. Pioneers used it for handles, wagon wheels, and rocking chairs.
6) OVERLOOK is your photo opportunity. Many weddings have been hosted at this spot. Look across the stream for activity in the bird box in front of you.
7) The BIRD BLIND has seed provided by the Quittapahilla Audubon Society from Nov. 30 - May 30 and is used by both birds and mammals.
8) The AMPHITHEATER is used for night walks and nature programs. The handicapped portion of the trail ends here, however the trail does continue its loop.
9)The NORTH FACING HILL is especially beautiful in April and May when it is carpeted with wildflowers. The microhabitat has perfect conditions for such growth.
10) The straight trees lining the trail here are WHTIE ASH used for baseball bats. Its coverings shades out small competition (understory).
11) The final stop is the FIELD before you. If left unmowed, would enter several stages to eventually returen to its natural state as a wooded area.
If you continue across the field and to the left you will find yourself back at the park lodge. Please also visit the Habitat Nature Trail located behind Pavilion # 2 across from the tennis courts.
Cache is the familiar tupperware container
