Geocache Description:

A very urban cache, in a "mini" container that has a small log book and pencil. Be prepared; Urban means it will be busy in the area. Wait for a break in the traffic, or just act like you own the place and few people will bother even noticing you. I keep an eye on this one, so if it happens to be taken by a Geo-Muggle, I'll replace it quickly. It is not in plain site, but easy to gain access to.

In February 2002, the LEO newspaper published a list of things a person might say or do that would brand them as being from Louisville. Readers sent in the items, and a recurring theme was "giving directions based on things that aren't there anymore or names that have changed, but your directions never confuse any of the other Louisvillians (Example: "Turn where the White Castle was on Eastern Parkway; down the street from the old Sears; take the Jefferson Freeway, etc.)". This is the first in what I hope to be a series of caches located at such directional landmarks that aren't there. I decided to begin at the site that was quoted most often in the article; The Old Sears Building. I had hoped to be able to give a bit of history of the place, but a quick search of the web yielded many references to resturants and businesses in or near the building, but no information about the building itself. My own memories go back to the fancy stairway that led to the second floor (still visable through the front of the building, but a bit worse for the wear), and to warnings from my mother about getting my shoelaces caught in the escalator when we rode up inside the store. I remember buying my first transistor radio there in 1964, and using it to listen to the first Great Steamboat Race (Remember when radios were labeled with how many transistors they had? Well this one was a THREE Transistor radio)! GeoCacher JPlus14 remembers it at this location into the early 80's because it was there when they moved to Louisville in 1981. It must have moved in the early to mid 80's to its new home in the Oxmoor mall. If anyone who can contribute more information, I will be happy to add it to this site (with credit!).
