Geocache Description:

This is a perfect cache for ATV, horse back, or short hike. It is located east of the town of Levan up Chicken Creek Canyon. Update 6/17/2017, the forest service has posted this trail closed to ATV and motorized vehicles. Horses and bikes are still an option in addition to walking.

Updated 6/17/2017. Do to the fact that this cache has not been found for two years I figured that I should check on it. The ammo can is gone, nowhere to be found, most likely stolen. I replaced the container with a 28 oz plastic jar that has been painted black. It is hanging in a cedar tree about eye level if you are 6' tall. This is the same tree where the original ammo can was hid. There is an aspen tree growing right next to the cedar tree and another cedar tree about 4' from that tree. Due to the effort and time that it will take to reach this location I would prefer that everyone finds it that is looking for it.

The original coordinates seem to be off by several feet. Try this instead N39 31.709' W111 43.870
or N39 31.713' W111 43.864'

The Forest Service has closed Red Dick canyon to ATV and motorized vehicles. You will have to park them at the mouth of Red Dick canyon. Horses and bikes are still allowed. Cows are grazed in this area. If the wire gate is closed keep it closed. The man wire gate is to the right of the main gate.

Make sure to get a drink from the spring at the mouth of Red Dick canyon. It is a pipe coming out of the side of the hill. This is some of the best water you will ever taste, nice and cold.

Original description from 5/26/2003:
Local legend claims that the cave was used by Butch Cassidy and The Wild Bunch as a hideout. Matt Warner, one of the members of "The Wild Bunch" was born in Ephraim and raised in Levan so he was probably well aware of the cave.

The cave is more of a cavern than a cave, but it is big enough to get in out of the rain with a few horses. The locals claim the the cave was much larger then it is today. The floods of 1983 forever changed Chicken Creek canyon and washed several feet of sediment into the cavern. If you plan to look and dig for some of the so called hidden loot make sure you have a good back and several days to waste looking for it. If you find any gold coins please remember me and send some my way as a commission.

Turn east at 1st South off of Hwy 28 at this location (N39 33.351’ W111 51.815’)
At the Pigeon Creek, Chicken Creek fork (N39 33.363’ W111 50.124’) take a right up Chicken Creek Canyon.

At the Chicken Creek campground (N39 31.877’ W111 46.451’) you can park and unload your ATVs or horses. The campground is no longer maintained by the forest service so there is no charge to park or use it. You can continue to the mouth of the side canyon with high clearance vehicles but you will NOT want to take any trailers (horse trailers) past the campground. The road is narrow in a few spots beyond the campground.

Vehicles can be parked at the mouth of Reddick Canyon (N39 31.015’ W111 44.542). The cache is a short 1.25 miles hike on foot from this point. Horses can continue directly to the cache and cave.

The trail will make a fork (N39 31.592’ W111 44.262’) Stay to your right on the fork.

We hid this cache with a heavy cloud covering. We had a hard time keeping a lock on the satellites with all three of the GPS units so the waypoint for the cache might be off a bit. If you are having a hard time finding the cache try one of the following waypoints
N39 31.723’ W111 43.861’ or N39 31.728’ W111 43.846’

The cache is in an ammo can at the base of two large cedar trees. It contains 4 AA batteries and a bunch of kids toys.

The cave is south of the cache. This waypoint (N39 31.677 W111 43.845) should get you close enough to the cave to find it without to much trouble.

Good Luck
