Geocache Description:

Access mostly by paved(?) and hard packed gravel roads and a short easy walk.

This is a Geodetic Survey of Canada monument, part of the Canadian Base Network.
The monument, 1 of 6 in Nova Scotia, is located in Pictou county.

I thought it would be neat to have a geocache search that allowed you to check your GPS accuracy. My Magellin 315 GPS was off slightly (a few meters) when I first arrived at the site but as I allowed it to average for a few minutes it came up with the exact same full meters as the posted co-ordinates which I thought was pretty good. I had expected a hand held unit to be slightly off. Actually it was off in elevation, I got 185m instead of 190m, but still not to bad. When I was there it was a clear day and I had 8 satellites at full strength which probably helped.

The monument is in what once was a field (now partial woods) on the north west corner of 2 gravel roads. There are signs along the road on the east side of the area indicating this is crown land. There is also a small swamp on this side so entry is better from the south. There is a path off the road on the south side about 100 meters from the corner. The monument is about a 3 to 5 minute easy walk, I do not suggest you use a car on this section.

The co-ordinates for the monument as given by the government are;
20-520870.65E and 5037124.14N (datum = NAD83).

Please log (on this geocache site) the type of GPS you use and your readings, both initial and average. It might be interesting to see how your GPS compares to others.

The cache is a white plastic jar about 5 inches by 8 inches and contains a log book, pencil and geocache disclaimer only, no trinkets.
Cache is about 65 meters from the monument at a bearing of 112 degrees. It is located in a stone cache in a stone wall(?) under a gnarled old apple tree (the tree part is not much of a hint as you will see).

As an extra, if you want to continue the hunt, there are 4 other Geodetic Survey markers in the immediate vicinity (all within 250m). I do not have government co-ordinates for them so do not use them as a check point for your GPS.

Marker#95N030 --- 20-520854E, 5036997N
Marker#95N031 --- 20-520858E, 5037137N
Marker#95N032 --- 20-520886E, 5037173N
Marker#95N033 --- 20-520876E, 5037103N

Then there is a Nova Scotia Control Survey marker #6346 for the Land Registration & Information Service at 20-520722E, 5036880N. Again these are not government co-ordinates.

Happy Geocaching
