Geocache Description:

This is the first of a series of 4x4 caches that offer the unusual, a challenge and/or scenic vistas.

Only two of the original four access roads to Nugget Hill are still open. One road is a 5 star technical route that starts near the town of Rowena and the other is now only a 3.5 star Gillespie Gulch road out of Jamestown. The road has been recently bladed (Oct 05) all the way to P5. The road to P5 is now easy but is very steep in places so I have set the new terrain rating to 4. (The road from P5 to the cache still has a few challenges left also.)

CA4WDCI road rating of 7 (Before the blading) Not recommended for 4x4ing in the winter due to ice.

My 4WD club trips up Gillespie:

Directions to Gillespie Gulch: Go up 94 Rd. to the first stop sign in Jamestown. Turn left and go through the residential area. Turn right on 12th street and continue until you reach an intersection with a main private road going right. Turn left here just past the wood fence and don't stop until you go through the Forest Service gate (open). Now that you are off private land you are free to stop, lock in and air down.

Points of interest along the way:

P1 N40°06.472 W105°23.755 Intersection. Right turn is an optional easy scenic side trip up to a Mine Site about a mile away.

P2 N40°05.665 W105°24.274 Mine Site.

P3 N40°05.533 W105°24.457 Mine Cabin. Enter at your own risk. Find "Geo xxx" (Can see without going in) The number xxx = A

P4 N40°05.255 W105°24.449 Mine Site. Subtract 1040 from the Bondholder date to get B

P5 N40°05.150 W105°23.540 Top end of the Rowena access route. Do walk down to see "The Rock" obstacle. (The road is not bladed from here on up to the cache.)

P6 N40°05.A W105°22.B Location of cache. Plan on having lunch when you park your ride on the vista. "The winners circle!" Firstfinders Rewarded.

* Special thanks goes to Flying Mallards for his help and Jaidmaster for more accurate coordinates. *

The Black Rose Mining Company may close this road to jeeps in the future. Better hurry or get your hiking boots out!
