Geocache Description:

A great family hike along the blue-blazed Tunxis trail.

This cache is located along the Tunxis trail in Hartland. The caves were formed from a jumble of enormous boulders - there are rooms and passageways throughout the rock pile to explore. On our latest visit my five year old spent over an hour excitedly climbing through all the various caves with a flashlight.

To start, park at the corner of Legeyt Road and Rte. 179 near N41 57.152 W72 54.915. The trail starts directly across the street, past the gate. You will follow an old logging/fire road until it merges with the Tunxis trail near N41 57.061 W72 55.641. Head southwest on the blue trail, past some old cellar holes and other ruins. The cache is located near the caves, just off the trail, so little bushwacking is required.

On our recent visit there were a lot of mosquitoes, and most of the trail was very wet and muddy from the frequent rain we've been having. The hike is about a mile one way, and gently graded for almost its entire length. There are some steep and rocky sections you will need to negotiate to reach the cache, and there are some dropoffs at the top of the caves, so keep little ones close at hand.

The cache is an ammo box. From the looks of the beer cans and firepits I found around the area, this is a popular party spot, so please be sure to rehide the cache well.
