Geocache Description:

A scenic visit to the Center of the Navajo Nation. This cache is wheelchair accessible.

Window Rock, Arizona, contains the administrative center of the Navajo Nation, the Navajo Nation Council Chambers, the Navajo Nation Museum, and yes, THE Window Rock.

In the mid-30s, John Collier, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, proposed Window Rock as the site of the Navajo Center Agency. Within a year, administrative buildings were completed for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Navajo Nation, and Public Health Service.

The spring at Window Rock (also known as Tseghahoodzani [Rock with a Hole in It], or Ni’ ‘Alnii’gi [Earth’s Center]), is important in the Water Way Ceremony (Tohee). This is one of four places where Navajo Medicine Men collect water for this ceremony.

Also at the Window Rock is the Navajo Nation Veteran’s Memorial Park. This park was dedicated in 1995 to commemorate the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country, their land, and the Dine way of life.

While in Window Rock, take the time to visit the Navajo Nation Museum located on Highway 264 just west of the New Mexico/Arizona State Line. Also, if you visit on Friday or Saturday, there is an open air market at the corner of Highway 264 and Indian Route 12.

In order to claim this cache, take your picture, with your GPSr, with the Window Rock in the background and post it with your log to this cache.
