Geocache Description:

Griffith Peak is located in the Mount Charleston area, in the Spring Mountains 35 miles north-west of Las Vegas. This hike will provide you an escape from the summer desert heat. The trail is well maintained, 9.5 miles round trip.

Travel US Highway 95 North out of Las Vegas to exit at Route 157. Take Harris Springs Road off State Route 157. The dirt road runs up and over some hills, then drops into Harris Spring Canyon. After traveling 3 miles you will see a sign for Griffith Peak trail head, turn right at the fork in the road. Drive another 5.5 miles until the dirt road ends in a parking area (roughly N36 12.232, W115 36.049). The trail begins on the WEST side of the parking area where boulders have been placed to block off an old road:

Back in the 1940's, when the road was being built by the CIVILIAN CONSERVATION CORPS (CCC). President Roosevelt came to inspect the construction site. When the foreman was asked what the road's destination was, he said he did not know. The president immediately ordered all construction to be stopped.

Following this old road for about 1 1/2 miles where it breaks into a trail. The first part of the trail is an easy ascent through pinion pines and scrub oak. The second part of the trail becomes steeper. There are several switchbacks to traverse a few steep sections as you meanders through White Firs, Ponderosa Pines and grassy meadows with colorful flowers.

Approximate time 3 1/2 hours up, 2 hours down.

Note: The dirt road leading to Griffith Peak trailhead is not recommended for vehicles with very low clearance, but if you take your time you can easily avoid some of the high rocky areas along the roadway if you use a low clearance vehicle.

BE PREPARED: Check your vehicle. Make sure your spare tire is inflated in case you might need it. How's the oil in the engine? It's a long hike back to the highway. Items to have on hand, Water, snack, tire iron, jack, fix a flat.

The cache is located in a small silver canister covered carefully with rocks. The rocks cover the cache, but it is covering is not to draw attention to it (low profile).
