Geocache Description:

North Tonawanda Roll of Honor

A proud tribute is here paid to citizens of North Tonawanda who answered the call to colors in World War II. So states the headline across the top of the wall. Additions have been made as the years have gone by. The origianl plates with the names inscribed on them are gone. We are grateful to a community which has taken the time to refurbish the wall. Wars also have been added...Korea...Vietnam...

To get credit for this virtual, log it as a note and email the answer to the following questions. DO NOT give away the answers in your logs as this will spoil it for other cachers. All logs without an email will be deleted.

1) My Uncle Reed fought in WW II. His name is in the Roll of Honor. His first name was Robert, but he was always known by his middle name. His last name begins with a B. For your first question, you must tell me his last name?

2) Growing up in North Tonawanda, I always knew that my neighbor had lost her son in WW II. She was what is known as a 'Gold Star Mother'. If you lost a son or daughter in a war, the blue star that you hung so proudly in your door or window was changed to gold. You had given a child to the war effort. My neighbor's sons first name was Everett. He is on the KIA list for WW II. For your second question, you must tell me his last name?

3) The 'War To End All Wars' turned out not to be so. A friend of mine is on the wall. He is also on 'The Wall' in Washington, DC. He was KIA in Vietnam. His first name is Daryl. Your third question is, what is his last name?

4) A nation was moved by the words of a young President..." Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." We are proud to have a Memoriam to him. Your last question is, who is this President?

Thank you for taking the time to share a bit of North Tonawanda's finest with me. Behind you across the street is an old grave yard. Here lie other war heros. If you'd like to walk about the markers, please do. It is quite a journey into the past.
Note added 6/27/03. MsBusyMom would like to add her personal memories. "As a child I liked to sit and read at this spot on my way home from the library. My grandfather is on this wall. He was a colonel during WWII and although he never saw combat he was a communications specialist and decoded many top secret messages. The cemetary across the street was another place I used to love to explore. Many graves there are over 200 years old and it's rather creepy after dark." A simple wall can mean so much to many people.
