Sitting Bull's Camp Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Electric Mouse: I recieved a complaint that this cache is on reservation property without permission. Because of the unique nature of the area and the fact that reservation property is privately owned, I have to archive and request that the container be retrieved. If the information is in error and there is permission for the cache, please email me with the contact information of the reservation official that gave permission and I can unarchive.

Thanks!

Geocache Description:

Sitting Bulls Camp is the spot were sitting bull spent the last years of his life. This is also the spot were he met his tragic death.

Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka) Camp Site

On this site on Dec. 15 1890 Chief Tananka Yotanka (Sitting Bull) , was killed by indian police. Sitting Bull was a key figure in the revival of the ghost dance, the government worried that the ghost dance would disrupt their efforts to confine the Sioux to the reservations. It was decided that he would be arrested and returned to the Standing Rock agency. He was tragically killed during the arrest attempt. This incident has almost become a forgotten part of our history, and very few people know of the site our how to find it. It is in a remote location of Corson County , South Dakota. It is approximately 4 miles east and 6.5 miles south of Bullhead, SD. It is located on the banks of the grand river, near were sitting bull was born in 1834.

To get to the site from Mclaughlin, SD, you would take highway 63 south about 3.7 miles to the Bullhead Road.(this is a gravel road). You then head west on the bullhead road for approximately 9 miles. you would then head south at coordinates N45* 45.428' & W100* 59.820. This is a less maintained section line road. The site is 6.5 miles straightline south of the coorninates approximately. The road meanders down to the flat Grand River Valley floor. I have been to site many times with a 2 wheel drive car. in wetter times there is an intermittent stream that necessitates a 1/3 of a mile walk to the site.
The Cache consists of a red ammo box with Geocaching.com stenciled on the side.

When you get to the site check out the cabins to the east.

The computer rated this a 2. I changed the difficulty level to a 3 mainly due to the difficult drive to get to the site. By the time you arive at the camp site you will be driving on little more than a path. When you are at the site you will be the only people for miles, so getting stuck or car problems could necessitate a walk of 6 or more miles.
