RECREATIONAL NIKE Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

fishingjohn: After a long run, 9 years. They have regraded and removed any all places to hide a cashe. Years ago this location was in the back " 40" of the place. No longer it is now by road and 10 Lacrosse fields. I hope all who found it enjoyed. Now you can say remember when.

Geocache Description:

NOTE:
I have permission for this cache. The Recreation Department requests that no caching for this cache be done 8AM to 4 PM Monday to Friday during the months of July and August. They have a day camp for the young ones during those hours. Thank you

The Lakeview Road Recreation Area in the Town of Hamburg is commonly called the "NIKE BASE", a reference to the facilities days as a United States Army Base. The Nike missiles were installed here to protect the heavy industry in this area. The Nike, a short range missile, very quickly became obsolete. All the missiles and equipment were removed. The buildings and the cement platforms for the radar system (west of Arena) were left standing. For more information on the area as a Nike base see this web page
(visit link)

The land was acquired as recreation land by the Town of Hamburg in 1969, the Nike Base is now home of the Recreation Department's offices.

The complex also includes the Hamburg Town (Ice) Arena, a Model Air Park and a BMX bicycle course. In addition, there are athletic fields for soccer, lacrosse, baseball, softball (lighted), and a Geocache site named Recreational Nike.
All cashers must park in front of the Arena (42° 42.934' N 78° 53.200' W) and walk to what you believe is the location of the cache.
After reading the signs you will know why you must park here. Let your GPS do the work. You should get good readings as the area is wide open. The facilities are in constant use. Please be discrete. Once you believe you have zeroed in on the cache’s location, look around and think it out. You are looking for a 1/2 gal jar. No bush whacking will be needed. Try to preserve the hiding area for the next cacher. Please place the cache back just as found.
I hope you have as much fun finding and inspecting the cache as my family and I did putting it all together. Cache on!!!
