Little Woodbury (Wilts) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Bill D (wwh): When I placed this cache here it was a quiet area, but that's changed due to the new developments nearby, and hiding places in this little beech belt are few, so I've decided to archive this one. Thanks to everyone who visited!

Geocache Description:

The quarter mile route to this cache should be suitable for buggies and possibly wheelchairs when the ground is firm, but please note that there is a sometimes busy road to cross, and there is a roadside kerb to negotiate. Wheelchair users may need to get under a three foot six high vehicle barrier, as the pedestrian gap beside it is probably too narrow for most wheelchairs. The container itself may not be retrievable by wheelchair users.

Little Woodbury was an Iron Age farmstead which was excavated in the late nineteen thirties. The excavation, though never completed due to the outbreak of World War Two, changed the views of British archaeologists on how people lived in pre-Roman Britain. Nothing can now be seen of Little Woodbury, but the remains still lie there under the field adjacent to the cache, at N 51 03.025 W 001 47.245 . You can find more information about Little Woodbury here.

This pleasant location, with its beech belt and its views of the city and the cathedral, seems recently to have become a dumping ground for local cowboy builders, but it is still a spot worth visiting.

There is a long lay-by at N 51 03.043 W 001 47.582. From there cross the road and walk south to the right of way sign, then follow the footpath. If there are horses in the field they won't bother you, as they're tethered. The frequent dog walkers and occasional riders are not, and may be a problem while you're searching for the cache.

The container itself is a 500ml pot, so this is a small cache. It's painted black.

This cache is very close to Salisbury District Hospital. Shortly after first visiting the location with a view to putting a cache here I was rushed to that hospital for an emergency operation, without which this cache would never have been placed.
