In the Seventies we saw something were never saw before. High
gas prices. I remember when gas was about 30 cents a gallon. With
the oil embargo's it went up to as much as 70 cents a gallon and
more. Still cheap by today's standards, but it was a lot for us.
Not only that but gas was also in short supply. To get around it we
started buying smaller more fuel efficient cars. But what they
gained in fuel efficiency, they lost in power. So what did this
have to do with the Beer Run along I-80 to Wyoming. Two words:
Parley's Summit. Now Parley's Summit wasn't a real problem for me.
I still drove a V8 engine, '69 Chevy Malibu, which took the road
without a sweat. But for some reason I always seemed to get behind
some 4 cylinder Japanese job, that couldn't seem to go faster than
30 miles an hour. But that was the hardest part of the drive once
you got past Parley's Summit it was all down hill from there.
This little hike will give you a nice view of the Parley's
Summit community. Also the were a lot of colorful wild flowers
along the trail when I went up. Hope you enjoy your time up
here.
