Geocache Description:

Black Cemetery is the most ancient graveyard situated on high rolling ground at 1,000 foot elevation

This cache is located inside the BLACK CEMETERY; off the west side of State Route 235 approximately two tenths of a mile south of Marquart Road and down a grassy lane about three tenths mile.

Black Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Clark County, Ohio. Andrew Black Sr. (1783 - 1854) is the earliest settler of Pike Township, Clark County, Ohio. He arrived from Virginia in 1805, cleared the land and built a rude log pole log cabin. In 1806, his wife, Susannah (1781 - 1845) and child arrived. In 1807, a brother, Samuel Black, arrived. The second known settler of Pike Township is Adam Verdier (1778 - 1846) who arrived in 1806. The remains of these early Pike Township pioneers rest here.
