Wildfire is one of the most destructive natural forces known to mankind. While sometimes caused by lightning, nine out of ten wildfires are human-caused.
The Fountain Fire started at 12:50 pm August 20, 1992 and destroyed a total of 64,000 acres, the size of the city of Sacramento, before it was contained on August 28. Suppression costs were more than 22 million dollars to support 4,464 people, 250 fire engines, 14 air tankers, 12 helicopters, 101 bulldozers and 93 water tenders. About 200 million dollars worth of timber was burned, with about 50 percent of the value salvaged. A total of 272 homes were lost as well as 489 other buildings at a value of more than 138 million dollars. Uncounted deer, bear and other mammals perished in the fire.
The unidentified arsonist was never caught.
