Geocache Description:

The cache is located along the Rachel Carson Trail in Harrison Hill Park, a county park in the northeast corner of Allegheny County. The trail is indicated by yellow blazes (paint marks) along the path.

Cachers with children should take care and avoid areas east of the trail: a hazard that will be quite obvious when you get there. A bit of bushwacking for the final approach will be required. The cache is a large ammo type container.

The Rachel Carson Trail is a day-hiking trail north and east of Pittsburgh, spanning about 34 miles from Harrison Hill County Park to North Park County Park in the northeast corner of Allegheny County. The trail is relatively primitive and steep in some places and no bridges or shelters were built along the trail. The trail is named after Rachel Carson, a marine biologist and early ecologist born in Springdale, PA in 1907. She is well known for writing The Sea Around Us, Under the Sea Wind and Silent Spring. In 1963, a committee appointed by President Kennedy supported Silent Spring, which awakened the country to the dangers of pesticides (particularly DDT), and criticized the negligence of industry and government agencies. Rachel Carson died in 1964. Further information about Rachel Carson or the Rachel Carson Trail can be found as: (visit link)
