Geocache Description:

Cache on the PCT near Cibbets Flat Campground along Kitchen Creek road.

We camped at Cibbets Flat over the 4th of July weekend in 2003. This campsite is up Kitchen Creek Road about 5 miles from I-8. We hadn't been up here before and were unsure if we’d get a site for the long weekend. It turned out to be about half full and a nice campsite as well. The campground is comprised of large Live Oaks with grassy
understory. It has a nice blend of open and shaded areas. Some sites are located along a seasonal creek. The six walk-in tent sites share five water spigots.

The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Kitchen Creek road about 1 mile down the road from the camp and crosses Fred Canyon road just under 1 mile up from the camp. The camp is on Fred Canyon road just off of Kitchen Creek Rd. Fred Canyon continues past the camp and gets a little rough where at least a high clearance vehicle is needed. It was dry the day we placed the cache but if it rains I’m sure it will need 4 wheel drive.

We placed the cache at a spot along the PCT near to where the PCT crosses Fred Canyon Road, just over 1 mile from the camp. The location can be accessed from two different directions. Since both starting points are in the Cleveland National Forest you will need a day or adventure pass to park your car at the starting points. Adventure Passes are available at the Mt Laguna store or the Pine Valley store as well as REI and other sports equipment stores.

The shorter hike to the cache is an easy 0.1 miles but requires a high clearance car to get to the starting point at N32 46.2815 W116 26.3468 along Fred Canyon rd. This road is closed from sunset to sunrise. This starting point has a nice view overlooking a creek. If you don't have a high clearance vehicle you can park near the camp and hike the 1 mile along the road to the starting point. Along the way you will come to a sharp right turn about .25 miles from the gate. On the outside of this turn is a good parking spot and some trails leading down into some nice cascading falls and small pools. Non-4WD cars should be ok up to this point.

The longer hike to the cache is around 2 miles and starts where the PCT crosses Kitchen Creek road. No high clearance needed here, just plenty of stamina. The coordinates for this starting point are N32 44.8617 W116 27.0837. There is room to park 3 or 4 cars here. If you try this approach in the summer bring plenty of water, the high altitude and heat can dehydrate a person very quickly. The route to the cache from here is almost all uphill on a slight grade.

The cache is a small green ammo can 10 or so inches long. There are snakes here so look carefully before moving in and reaching for it.
