81 Miles Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

bluegrassfan: I would like to thank all who have hunted my cache "81 Miles." As has happened with two other cache locations along I-65, the Sonora rest stop at I-65 North mile marker 81 has been closed. I am attempting to make arrangements to enter the former rest stop to retrieve two travel bugs. Thanks again.

Geocache Description:

If you don’t read at least part of this page CAREFULLY, you may miss the cache. The ne waypoint is: N 37* 32.005 W 085* 52.886. This is only temporary.

81 miles. From where? From the Kentucky-Tennessee border. This is a small Traditional-Traditional cache. What is a Traditional-Traditional cache, you ask? Why, it’s a Traditional cache "in" the obligatory tree. You MUST provide your own writing instrument.

81 Miles cache is hidden at the Rest Stop located at the 81-mile marker on I-65 North, approximately 11 miles south of the northbound Elizabethtown-Fort Knox, Kentucky exit. But BEWARE. You MUST pass the Sonora exit, Exit 81, to get to the rest stop. And be careful, traffic enters I-65N from Sonora, and you may have to merge into it to go to the rest stop.

In addition to the usual building with information and restrooms, and a vending machine area, there is an area behind the building where picnic tables, benches, grills and a pavillion are located, among a lot of trees. There is even a water fountain (2, but one is broken). Sidewalks lead to each of these areas. It is in this area where the cache is hidden. To keep it from being easily seen I have covered the container with camouflage tape. You cannot see the container where it is hidden because I have also placed an object in the way. We don’t want straying eyes to see it. You don’t have to go into the surrounding woods or climb over fences (the cache is near a fence). You may have some trouble with your satellite signals in this area, but the signal not lost at all where the cache is hidden, during placement. At least if you do have trouble finding the cache you will be able to sit in the shade and ponder the cache location, during the summer months. Sit on the correct bench (post, but not grill), and you will be close. There is ample parking. There is a gate you pass through on your right to get to this area. The gate is locked at dusk and No Trespassing signs are posted, so be sure to log this cache during daylight hours.

The waypoint at the top of the page is for the cache location. It was determined by averaging 12 readings. Really? Well, some people are suspicious with the number thirteen. Anyone suspicious with the number 81?

The container is 5-3/8 inches long at the top (4-1/4 inches at the bottom), 3-1/8 inches wide at the top (2-1/2 inches at the bottom, and 2-1/2 inches high. Remember, it is covered with camouflage tape, except for the bottom. Through the bottom you can see a fluorescent label with Geocaching.com written on it. Click below to see photos of the container.

The original cache contained:

Several Key Rings
3 Coupons for free food items at Sonic Drive-ins
1 State Quarter (I don’t remember which state)
Log Book
NO pencil or pen

PLEASE re-hide the cache exactly as you found it. Also, if you take something, please leave something.
