Steavey Takes A Tumble Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

maccamob: RIP Steavey. When we went to check on him, we found the landscape considerably changed. The effects of the Black Saturday fires were very much in evidence. Many of the beautiful mountain ash trees are dead; about half are showing regrowth on average, but the proportion varies between the east and west sides of the valley, with barely a third surviving on the east side. The whole valley much more open and bright now. The path beside Steavey's home shows plenty of evidence of new earthworks carried out by DSE as part of their ongoing restoration of the area. We are unsure whether Steavey survived the fires or not, but he seems to be buried anyway. However, like the mythical Phoenix, he has risen again in a new form. See GC2H6JP, "Steavey Tumbles Again", for his new life, and enjoy the falls all over again - they are flowing very well right now.

Geocache Description:

Victoria’s highest waterfall is the site for maccamob’s seventy-sixth cache, and at this time of year, with plenty of water flowing over the top, it is spectacular. You can hear the sound of the water when you arrive at the car park. A $2 parking fee applies, but the view is well worth this small expense.

The falls are illuminated at night, the power required being provided by a small hydro-electric plant a short walk downstream from the falls. Wander along the paths and enjoy the ferns and trees. Relax on the conveniently placed park benches and take your time to enjoy the majesty of nature. The cache can wait and, besides, it’s not far away.

Satellite reception may be limited here, and we noted some variability in reading the coordinates. There were also quite a few tourists passing by along the path. Taking these two elements into account, we have made the difficulty rating a bit higher than we would otherwise.

The cache is hidden one step off the path in a camo 400ml clip-top box, so you will need to BYO pen. As usual, please ensure the cache is well hidden from casual observation again before you leave.
