Geocache Description:

****Hint updated on 10-24-03 the third hint is now the actual coordinates. ****
**** QUESTIONS UPDATED AS OF 07-31-03*****
*Note the coordinates listed above are not the cache location** But it is within 10 miles. The cache is easy to find and get to. Note that there is no bushwhacking involved!! It would be a good beginners cache.

I decided that if I have to learn all this Geek stuff with my new position at work then maybe my fellow cachers should have the fun of learning along with me. This will hopefully be a series of caches in this area. This one is easy to get to and the answers shouldn’t be too difficult. They will get harder later.

A good source of information is at www.PCGuide.com. It's even searchable :-).

Answer the questions and do the math.

1)How many characters are allowed for a file name in "pure" DOS? (ie: dos file is "XXXXX.XXX" up to how many characters allowed to the left of the dot. Don't include the three character extension to the right of the dot.) (answer=A)

2)In “normal" formatting, how many bytes are there per sector? (answer=B)

3)How many "primary" partitions can be placed on a hard drive? (don't count extended partitions) (answer=C)

4)If a hard drive reports a C,H,S value of 2384,16,1024, what is the physical capacity of the drive rounded to the nearest gigabyte? (just multiply out and round don't divide by 1024) Answer is divisible by 10. (answer=D)

5)In a FAT 12 formatted 1.44 MB 3.5-inch floppy disk, how many sectors are there per cluster? (answer=E)

6)What is the decimal value of 5Ah? (answer=F)

7)What is the decimal value of 111101? (answer=G)

The cache is located at: North XX deg. YY.ZZZ min.
West LL deg. MM.NNN min.
where:

XX = F/2
YY = C + D + 13
ZZZ = E + 140
LL = G*2
MM = A*7
NNN = B – 136

For a checksum the latitude numbers add up to 25 and the longitude numbers add up to 32.

The original contents are a few goodies and a handful of my signature item.

* Trivia – when you stand at the cache you are about 1000 feet from the Trafcon residence looking in one direction and about 1000 feet from Cliff Robinson's residence in the opposite direction.

Hope you have fun. If folks like it I will continue the series shortly.
