Martonvásár is located between Budapest and Székesfehérvár, next to the national route 7, just in the northern border of the Mezõföld. People lived here even in the Avar times too. You can see tombstones from that age. This was a main trade center, but at the Turkish times, it losts all of it's inhabitans. The Brunswick family was the main renovator of this place. They used modern farming methods, but basically they were known as music lovers. Ludwig van Beethoven was quest here two times (in 1800 and in 1801). Beethoven was offered a pianosonata to the count. Beethoven's misterious "immortal darling" was Jozefin Brunszvik. After the dieing of the Brunszvik family the lordship become the property of József archduke, and after him, the beermaker Drehers get it. Today, in the Brunszvik castle you can find the Martonseed Agricultural Experiemental Farm in the hands of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This is the main center of the seed-sublimations in Hungary since 1949.
The castle was built between 1773-1775 in baroque style. The present neogothic style was built in 1875. The half of the building is the home of the science institution and the other half is the home of the Beethoven museum. This museum shows the history of the Brunszvik family and the memories of Beethovens visits here. The beautiful park is a nature reservation. On the island in the lake, you can find marshy cypresses. In every summer there is a big Beethoven concert in the island since 1960.
