Crash site of Idaho Air National Guard aircraft 65-904.
On May 17th 1990 at about 5:47 PM an RF4C Phantom Jet flown by the Idaho Air National Guard slammed into the mountain side at this spot.
The pilot reported his flight controls were jammed and he was flying inverted with no control. He made the life saving decision to call for an immediate ejection. The aircraft holds two crewmembers, both individuals ejected safely moments before it hit the ground. They were picked up a short time later, cold and shaken up but otherwise unhurt.
There is a large impact crater where the aircraft hit. All the big and important parts were recovered for the accident investigation but you can still find many small bits and pieces of the aircraft at the crater and below it on the mountain. If you are familiar with this type aircraft you will be able to identify a lot of them.
The cache is a paint can wrapped in black plastic. The contents are mainly Air Force strips, patches, and related items. A black bear is also there to protect the site.
Recent cachers have noted parts being taken. Enjoy the bits and pieces you find but please leave them for the next Geocachers to look over. Thanks, Owyhee
