Here is the interesting story told to me by a local historian:
When the cherokees were being rounded up in Murphy for the trail of tears, the indians were able to slip out a few men and women with the understanding to start a new colony. These cherokee ended up in this location (When you see it you will know why.) After a while the Army caught on to their plans and sent party after party out to round them up. After months with no success they sent Col. Pickens out with a crack force of scouts. The search took much longer than expected and it ended up being in the middle of winter when the caught up with the rogue indians. The evening before they were going to attack the settlement they were hit by a blizzard that lasted for days. This storm devestated the army and many of the men were dying from exposure and starvation when a group of indians came down and rescued the men. After nursing the men back to health Col. Pickens returned to Fort Butler with the story that they were unable to find the secret encampment. He kept this secret until the end of his life. On the day of his death he told the story to one of his dear friends. This is how this beautiful spot received its name. Is this story true? I would like to think so. Have fun and be safe.
